When you view so much content online, I can’t think of any better word to describe seeing images printed than exhilerating - especially when they are printed well and on high-quality paper. If there is something I’ve photographed for you, or just an image you’re interested in having a print of from my site, contact me for more information.

Net profit from any orders placed from today until Thursday, March 14 will be added to my Whole Planet Foundation donation page. Whole Planet Foundation’s mission is poverty alleviation through microcredit in communities worldwide that supply Whole Foods stores with products. The goal I set up is small, but enough to provide a microloan and the opportunity for an impoverished woman to create or expand a home-based business. Occasionally I will be finding small ways to do a little good through your print orders. For updates, sign up for my newsletter.

I have been working on putting together/editing/revisiting a printed portfolio. I chose an 11×14 portfolio and slipcase by Scott Mullenberg; it’s classic, meticulously-designed and sturdy. Many thanks to Scott and Pushdot Studios for your help and creative input!

I met Tanya Harsch, a classically trained oil painter, at the Waltham Mills Open Studios this past fall. She teaches at the Boston Center for Adult Education and also offers private lessons in her studio. Early one morning, I photographed her working on a still life study and the details of her workspace. While she was working on her study, I was able to do a bit of a test as well, for a project I’m trying to develop with video. I’m quickly learning that it is going to be a very, very long-term project with a lot of learning involved!

One of the things I’ve been telling people who are just getting started with a creative endeavor is to dedicate (demand) a small fraction of time in their schedule for experimenting – even a tiny bit of time is better than none. While we were snowed in, I painted again just for fun. My friend who teaches Italian just signed up for a French class, so that she could remember what it was like to be an absolute beginner. It’s creative cross-training, and I think of it as the equivalent to turning the painting upside-down and looking at it that way.

I’m working on my new site as well as a printed portfolio…meeting some interesting people and learning a lot through this process, so I thought I’d share some of the experience here. First step: I made tiny little prints of most of what I have out there. No overthinking it…just wanted see everything together and off of the screen. Stuck them to a wall…even if they were on a table I have no doubt that my pug would get to them and steal them! Next I’ll single out the ones that work best, weed out the ones that work the least, and go from there. Here’s a great video about editing and sequencing portfolios by Sean Stone from one of my favorite blogs, No Plastic Sleeves.

It’s been awhile, but I’ll just dive right back in with this great recommendation for a place to stay out in the Berkshires: The Briarcliff Motel. One peek at their website and it is no surprise that the owners, Richard and Clare, used to run their own marketing agency (or that a Creative Director picked this as the place to stay during our shoot at Tanglewood – thanks Bennett!). We checked in late after a day of shooting and I made my usual plans to wake up at sunrise the next morning and roam around with my camera. The more comfortable the room, the less likely this happens, and sure enough I woke up just in time for homemade blueberry scones and granola, then packed everything up for a second day of shooting. It’s on my list of places to revisit.

The past few months have been one swirly adventure. Someone gave me the Q&A 5 Year Journal - which is pretty incredible because now I will remember what art movement best described my mood on a particular day or what superpower I wish I had (and will see how the answer changes over five years). Of course some of the most interesting questions for me have been about food. List three foods you ate today? While visiting friends in Asheville, NC this answer would be: Cheese, x3. Cheese vastly outnumbered all other items in the bag of groceries we brought out to a cabin, so we had some chevre with rosemary stuffed in baked figs and drizzled with honey, brie with bread and fig spread, and parmesan on my favorite simple pasta recipe (the lemon and mint pasta from Sam the Cooking Guy).

Other unforgettable things consumed in Asheville: goat cheese on pecan encrusted fried green tomatoes at Sunny Point Cafe, Muscadine grapes, Cheerwine, and the maple with smoked sea salt drinking chocolate at The French Broad Chocolate Lounge.

I love Minted! If you haven’t tried them already, their paper, printing and designs are extremely high-quality. The template I chose to use with my apple cider and gingerbread white chocolate biscotti photo was created by Annie Clark, a designer out of San Francisco.

…of a great idea.

Ever since I started taking a more active approach towards my ideas (the best ones are usually written on a napkin but I particularly enjoy this little notebook), it has been an adventure. The best part is that in doing so, it has put me in line with many other people who are pursuing a thought and working towards its realization. In the last few months, I’ve been watching as friends (young and old) pick up and move to another country or city, follow their intuition to a grad program, leave jobs, lose jobs, start a new business, reinvent their business, and most importantly take other people’s two cents and know when to leave it in the dish at the counter for someone else. The first time I put a voice to a big idea I was told it would not work out, and that wasn’t the last time that happened. I’m glad I did not listen.

Earlier this week I met a group of exceptional people and got to sit in on the plans for something that I know, without any doubt, will be amazing. I can’t say anything more about it but I feel that I got a glimpse of the beginning and can’t wait to tell you about it as the idea unfolds, detours, and takes shape.

I grew up in Lemon Grove, the city with the big lemon monument and “Best Climate on Earth” engraved underneath it. It was a small house with a large yard – as a kid it felt like it went on for miles. My parents grew corn, tomatoes, zucchini, beans, radishes, squash and pumpkins. There was a fig tree, a lemon tree, grape vines, and an apricot tree that was so old and full of fruit that it split down the middle. We had to collect all of the apricots from the broken half, and these are still the best apricots I’ve ever had. Although my family doesn’t live in the same house anymore, they still have a garden, fruit trees, and the summertime tradition of enjoying a steamed artichoke outside while grilling dinner.
